His rod and staff comfort us indeed!





"The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. 
(...) Your  rod and Your staff, they comfort me" 
Psalm 23:1; 4


This week I heard someone say that the Lord uses his rod to hit, and therefore, discipline his sheep (meaning us, His children).

That caused me to think about the scripture mentioned above that says that his rod and his staff comfort us. I started to imagine a sheep that went astray and a shepherd desiring to find it and then rescue it. Let´s keep this scenario in mind.



 The staff is a device used to RESCUE  the sheep as seen in the picture above. The ROD instead has a particular use as well. But, unlike many people think, the rod is NOT used to PUNISH the sheep that has gone astray. The rod is used to chase way dangerous animals (wolves, for example) that could threat the sheep. It simply makes NO SENSE to think that, JESUS, our GOOD SHEPHERD (John 10:11), after rescuing us, he would HARM us with a rod. I can´t see where that thought would "comfort" us.

We need to remember daily that we have A GOOD FATHER, the BEST SHEPHERD and even if we happen to go astray, His heart is to have us near and to LOVE US and TAKE CARE OF US. If his rod was really a weapon to chasten the sheep (correct by punishment), I doubt any sheep would really desire to BE BACK. But we have a GOOD SHEPHERD, who loves us and who gives HIS LIFE for us. That is what Jesus did on the cross. He has already given his life and received all the curse and punishment on his own flesh so that we could LIVE AN ABUNDANT LIFE IN HIS PRESENCE, experiencing his GOODNESS AND LOVE day after day!!! His heart is FOR us and never AGAINST us. 

Seeing things THIS WAY, we can definitely say: 

His rod and staff COMFORT us indeed!!!

Taking delight in God´s will...

I often wondered why it seemed to be so hard for us to accept God´s will.  Thinking about this, two things come to my mind: 1) Most of the time we are convinced that our own plans are the BEST way to attain our goals, to reach that place of peace and happiness; 2) We are not aware of God´s LOVE and the fact that every bit of His will has its root in HIS DEEP LOVE towards us. We have been deceived by being led to think that God only displays his will in order to mess up with our own plans. Submitting to his will often sounds like we are being nulyfied; it is usually not taken as a reason for joy, but for sorrow. BUT all that is NOT even close to THE TRUTH about God´s will for our lives. Again: we must remember that ALL HIS WILL IS ROOTED IN HIS DEEP LOVE FOR US!... Being a living magnet: attracting good things...

Surely goodness and mercy  shall follow me all the days of my life...  Psalm 23:6 One of the greatest issues in our hearts is doubting. It is like we KNOW in a way that God is good and He blesses us in many ways but we usually see it as a matter of SEASONS. There are seasons when we are happy, healthy, blessed... others not so! and this causes us not to be so SURE that things will be alright all the time .  But king David, even after facing great hardships (riots, persecution, betrayals), he would NOURISH one THOUGHT in his heart: THE ASSURANCE that God´s goodness and love would follow him ALL THE DAYS of his life. The only weapon against doubt is assurance. So we can always fight doubts in our hearts by simply declaring "SURELY his goodness and mercy will follow me"... We also see the prophet Isaiah teaching us such truth concerning our health (physical and emotional):  -Surely- he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows... (Isaiah 53:4)
